2010 NFL Supplemental Draft Supplement – Best Fits

The NFL Draft’s bastard cousin the Supplemental Draft kicks off this Thursday.  Yesterday,  Draftseason analyzed the two players most likely to get drafted and today we are going to look at what teams make the best fit for those prospects.  Here it goes.

HARVEY UNGA RB, BYU – 6’0 237 lbs.

BEST FITS:

New England Patriots - The Patriots have relied on a running back committe for years and may see Unga as a guy they can count on.  Laurence Maroney was supposed to be their back of the future but he has been frequently injured and hasn’t lived up to his first round billing.  Kevin Faulk is a nice 3rd down back but  he isn’t starting material, Fred Taylor is done, and Ben Jarvis Green Ellis has one too many names.  If the Pats took Unga, his chance may come sooner than later.

St. Louis Rams – Steven Jackson is clearly the horse in St. Louis but the Rams could take Unga to relieve some wear and tear on his body.  Unga has similar skills to Jackson as he is an excellent receiver out of the backfield and is also a big, physical back.  With a good camp, he could definitely become the primary backup to the Predator.

Miami Dolphins – The Phins have two solid backs in Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams but both have their issues.  Brown is a perennial injury risk as he’s played a combined 29 games in the last 3 seasons.  Williams has proven that age matters not, but is one toke away from suspension and is a threat to retire at any moment.  Unga would give them a young back who could step in if and when one of the top options misses time.

Washington Redskins – I hate to include the Redskins on this list as I’m not even sure they have any 2011 draft picks anymore but if any team could use a young back with upside its the Skins.  They have the geriatric trio of Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, and Willie Parker as their backs right now.  All of those guys have seen better days.  Unga would be seen as their RB of the future and could get a carry here and there to get acclimated to the pro game.

Cincinnati Bengals – Cedric Benson could still be suspended for ram jamming a bartender, and while Bernard Scott showed flashes last season, he didn’t exactly give the Benagals the impression he is their back of the future.  Unga could be drafted by the team as insurance for a Benson suspension and to provide competition for Scott for the starting gig if in fact that suspension takes place.

Seattle Seahawks – The Seahawks are a team without a featured back.  They have wee little Justin Forsett who did show some ability last year and looks to be in line for a starting job this year but it remains to be seen whether or not he can be the bell cow week in and week out.  They also have Leon Washington who is absolutely electric but it remains to be seen how he looks after recovering from that devastating leg injury.  Julius Jones is also there but is all but  done.  There is definitely room for Unga on this roster, if the Sehawks feel he is worth a pick.

JOSHUA PRICE BRENT DT, ILLINOIS  – 6’2  315 lbs.

BEST FITS:

New Orleans Saints – The Saints have been needing to get a big run stuffing defensive tackle to pair up with Sedrick Ellis for a few seasons now.  They did get Al Woods in round 4 of the 2010 Draft, but may feel inclined to take a gamble on Price Brent with a later round pick if they don’t feel Woods can cut the mustard.

Cincinnati Bengals – The Bengals like thugs and Price Brent does have some off the field issues but more than that they need beef on their defensive line.  Price Brent could make the squad as a rotational run stopper and be worth giving up a draft pick for.

Minnesota Vikings – The Williams Wall could be crumbling next year with the likely retirement of Fat Pat Williams.  Also the suspension that keeps getting suspended, continues to linger over their heads and could be handed down at some point of the season.  The Vikings have a few decent backups in Jimmy Kennedy and Fred Evans, but a young guy with upside will need to be added either on Thursday or during some point of the 2011 Draft.

Houston Texans – The Texans need to get some talent inside next to Amobi Okoye and failed to adequately address that in the 2010 Draft (Not an Earl Mitchell fan). Price Brent has the size and ability to make an impact and could help make the Texans defense a force against the run.

Indianapolis Colts – The Super Bowl runner ups have been terrible against the run for years and didn’t draft a defensive tackle until the 7th round last April.  Price Brent could earn playing time quickly and would benefit by having solid character guys like Peyton Manning, and Dwight Freeny around him.

Tennessee Titans – The Titans still are looking for an adequate replacement for Albert Haynesworth and may see enough upside in Price Brent to use a pick on him.  Their depth chart at defensive tackle isn’t exactly brimming with talent and Price Brent could climb it quickly.

Washington Redskins – You can never count out the Redskins in a Supplemental Draft, so they get included again.  They aren’t exactly thrilled with Albert Haynesworth and if they like Price Brent enough they may be willing to draft him and then look to make all those Haynesworth trade rumors come to fruition and actually trade the overpaid big fella.
