DraftSeason: You've been part of a few different programs, having transferred from the University of Colorado where you red-shirted, to Saddleback Community College in California, and now to Hawaii, what have you learned from this experience, and how has it affected you as a player and person?
Colt: You've been part of a few different programs, having transferred from the University of Colorado where you red-shirted, to Saddleback Community College in California, and now to Hawaii, what have you learned from this experience, and how has it affected you as a player and person?
DraftSeason: Did you feel any added pressure having to step in and fill the shoes of Timmy Chang, a quarterback who put up very impressive numbers during his tenure at Hawaii?
Colt: There is always pressure, and sure I felt pressure but I was prepared. My experience at my high school starting the year after Matt Lienart really taught me a lot. I knew that to be successful I needed to create an identity for myself, so people wouldn’t be eager to compare me to Timmy, but would notice the different skills I had to offer. I played like Matt in high school, and people compared me to him, and it was difficult. I created my own game and style since then, I think last year I showed that I would be a much different QB than Timmy, and slowly the pressure decreased. But Timmy was a great QB, and watching him play helped me a lot when I was learning the offense, you really gain a lot of respect for someone after you have studied their game.
DraftSeason: Who is your favorite target?
Colt: Honestly I don't have a favorite target. In this offense I don't think it would be smart to focus on one guy, we throw the ball way to much. I have a lot of talent out there, making sure everyone is getting a chance to make a play is important in the success of an offense, and it makes things much more difficult for the defense when they don't have one person to key on.
DraftSeason: Colt is an interesting first name, any story behind it?
Colt: My family has different names, my sisters are Carrera and Chanel, when my parents had a boy they knew they wanted something different, Colt happened to be what they chose. My real name is Colton James Brennan. I like that, but in the football sense Colt Brennan works better.
DraftSeason: What's worse getting sacked for a big loss or throwing an interception?
Colt: Interception!!! For Sure, if I get sacked I know I can get that back, it's a lot harder to strip a middle linebacker or DB for the ball.
DraftSeason: Please give yourself a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F) on the following aspects of your game:
Colt:
Accuracy - A, I threw more balls than anyone in the nation last year, and completed 68%, no bias.
Arm Strength - B, I don't have a cannon but for 60-65 yards I'll put it right there.
Scrambling Ability - B+, I'm trying to get that to an A this year.
Leadership - A, If you're a haule from Orange County and can win over 5 great Samoan lineman you can win over anyone.
DraftSeason: What would you say is the hardest part about playing quarterback at the collegiate level?
Colt: I think it's important to understand that the collegiate level is the first time football is a business. Responsibility, professionalism, Leadership, and so many more qualities must develop for you to be successful. Keeping football a game is the biggest challenge I think for College QB's.
DraftSeason: Who was your favorite NFL player growing up?
Colt: I liked Brett Favre; I don't think anyone was having more fun out there than Brett. I wore his number in high school.
DraftSeason: Is there any current NFL quarterback that you would compare your style of play to?
Colt:: I would say Brett Favre, cause I am a free spirit on that field, I like having fun like him. My style as a QB is pretty different, I'm not sure I would resemble anyone in the style I play.
DraftSeason: So what does Colt Brenan like to do in his spare time when he isn't tossing the pig skin around for the University of Hawaii?
Colt: Well I do live in Hawaii, so there is plenty to do. I like golfing, love basketball, love to fish, but usually I'm on the east side of the Island body surfing some of the nicest beaches in Hawaii.
DraftSeason: Finally Colt, who takes home the Maxwell Award this year?
Colt: I really don't know, that's going to be up to the College football fans, but I do plan on being one of the candidates you can vote for. |
