DraftSeason: Jacob what was it like participating in the Senior Bowl and playing with some of the best players in the Nation and being coached by and NFL staff?
Jacob: It was a great experience. To get the opportunity to compete against the best guys in the country and do it in front of the entire NFL is something that is very special. It was a great week!
DraftSeason: Is there any specific facet of your game that you are trying to improve before the Combine?
Jacob: I am just continuing to work on getting stronger and faster, getting my body prepared for the rigorous job of being an NFL player. But for the combine, I’m working on running a great 40 and showing my athleticism.
DraftSeason: What are some things that separate you from some of the other tight end prospects in this draft?
Jacob: I think my versatility is a separating point for me. I played WR for two seasons in college and I understand that part of the position. I’ve also continued to improve as a blocker, helping to open up holes in the run game. I’ve also played a lot of special teams, including holder and snapper. There are a lot of good tight ends in this draft, and it’s exciting to get to compete with those guys.
DraftSeason:
How did it feel beating LSU in triple overtime? Had you ever played in a more exciting and emotional game?
Jacob:
It was one of the most exciting moments in UK football history! Fortunately, we were able to have several games that were program-changing, emotional victories: ’06 Georgia, ’06 Music City Bowl vs. Clemson, ’07 Lousiville, ’07 LSU, ’07 Music City vs. FSU. Tough to pick a favorite out of those.
DraftSeason: Is there any coach or teammate that has had a significant influence on your career, or has helped you the most?
Jacob: I have developed great relationships with several of my coaches. My high school coach, Chuck Smith (now the LBs coach at UK) had a significant impact in my development as a player and a leader. Also, the senior class that I just graduated with at UK. I would strap it up again with those guys anytime.
DraftSeason: Who was the best player you ever faced in your career as a Kentucky Wildcat?
Jacob: Patrick Willis from Ole Miss.
DraftSeason: Is there any current NFL tight end that you’d compare your style of play to?
Jacob: I’d love to compare myself to a bunch of them! Lots of people say Dallas Clark, so that is fine with me. He is a tough guy who understands how to get open and catch the ball.
DraftSeason: Finally Jacob, what will the team that drafts you be getting?
are worthy of?
Jacob: They will be getting a guy that is going to work his tail off to help the team in whatever way he can. A guy that has been fortunate enough to be a part of great teams at every level: 58-2 and 4 state titles in HS, and helped turn around UK in the toughest division of the toughest conference in the country.
I love playing the game and feel pretty blessed to have the opportunity to do it for a living. I’m going to do everything in my power to be the absolute best football player I can be.
