2011 NFL Draft | 2011 NFL Mock Draft

Mike Kafka Interview

DraftSeason: Mike, you officially put yourself on the map at the East/West Shrine game (offensive MVP). How do you feel that experience helped you and your draft stock?
Mike Kafka: I definitely think it helped. It was a great experience to go out and play well, and it was also great to meet a lot of NFL scouts.

DraftSeason: With only 1 full year as starting quarterback under your belt at Northwestern do you feel you are ready to compete in the NFL or do you see yourself more of a project?
Mike Kafka:My mindset has always been to compete no matter what level. When I get to a team, I am going to do whatever I can to make that team better. I’ll let the coaches decide if I am a project or not.

DraftSeason: You are one of the more mobile and athletic quarterbacks in this years NFL Draft, what part of your game do you feel gets most overlooked that you don’t get enough credit for?
Mike Kafka: In the beginning of the season, I was touted as more of a running quarterback. Following this past season, I feel like I solidified myself as a dual-threat quarterback. I am confident in all of my abilities and I am improving daily, so I just need to keep doing that.

DraftSeason: What part of your game do you feel you need to improve on the most before personal workouts and the combine?
Mike Kafka: I think being in the shotgun at Northwestern, the biggest part I need to improve is the 5 and 7 step drop from under center.

DraftSeason: What current NFL quarterback would you most compare yourself too?
Mike Kafka: I’ve loved watching Brett Favre throughout his career. To some extent, I feel I have modeled my play against his, or at least aspired to.

DraftSeason: Who is the next star at Northwestern that we should keep our eyes on in the coming years?
Mike Kafka: I think linebacker, Quentin Davie, is a good player and has a future in the NFL. On the offensive side of the ball, I like Left Tackle, Al Netter. He is a tough player that will definitely get looks at the next level.

DraftSeason: What are your plans when your football career is officially in the books?
Mike Kafka: Hopefully I will have played long enough to where I don’t have to fall back on much, but if all else fails I’ve got my NU diploma to carry me through.

DraftSeason: Finally, any expectations come draft day?
Mike Kafka: What round as of now do you feel you are worthy of? I just want the opportunity to play at the next level. Draft day will figure itself out when it comes around.
